At full light I emerged from the hut, disoriented and depressed, as I often was after such nightmares. The others were already about. Jack was talking with Wahid, Owen was reorganizing our supplies, Sandy was off with the women.

I took my bowl of porridge and sat by the fire to eat. One of the porters handed me a mug of black coffee. As I finished, Tom joined me.

“You’re up late,” he said. I nodded. “You missed a bit.”

“What’s that?”

“Not action to speak of, but important.” He then lowered his voice and told me he’d been up before dawn, unable to sleep. While sitting in one of our chairs he’d noticed movement to his left. He’d looked and seen Sandy ducking out of the porters’ hut, all but running to her own.

“You can’t be serious,” I said.

“I am, most serious. I think the lady is a bit restless. Surely you’ve noticed the looks between her and Kwalik since before we left the mine?”

“No, nothing more than how she acts toward everyone with pants.”

“I’ve been waiting for this to happen.”

“Does Jack know? Or Owen?”

Tom laughed. “Not from me, but you can be certain the lady will find a way to let them both in on it, and you, as well. Otherwise, what was the point?”

I considered that, then said, “What did you think of the orgy?”

“The first I’ve ever seen. Do they do that often, you think?”

“I have no idea. It doesn’t seem likely.”

“Maybe it was for our benefit. I wonder if they wanted us to join in?”

I drained my mug just as Kwalik approached. There was an aggressive aspect to his gaze and a certain contempt for us in his manner. He loitered long enough to make his unspoken point, then ordered his men to prepare to set out.
